Project Overview

The aim of this scheme was to renovate all the paving materials using natural stone, widen the footway in The Sanctuary, raise the vehicular access to footway level in The Archway and reconstruct the carriageway around Dean's Yard to eliminate the existing surface deficiencies.

The overall objective was to upgrade the public realm at the site to a quality appropriate of the World Heritage Site status bestowed upon Westminster Abbey.

The improvements include:

  • Widening and repaving footways with reinforced stone paving and new surfacing in The Sanctuary
  • Installation of removable and permanent bollards on The Sanctuary and an automatic bollard in The Archway
  • Resurfacing The Archway and repaving footways with natural stone paving
  • Refurbishing the gas lamp columns
