Piccadilly Two Way Scheme

Piccadilly Two Way Scheme

Ward: West End

Streets Affected: Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus

Project Type: Major Projects

Project Overview

The Piccadilly Two Way (P2W) scheme is one of Westminster City Council’s "Better City, Better Lives" initiatives and is being introduced by the City Council in partnership with Transport for London and the Crown Estate. Part 1 of the P2W scheme introduced major improvements in Pall Mall, St James’s Street and Piccadilly, which was completed in October 2011. It introduced two-way traffic movements on Pall Mall and St James’s Street and significant improvements to the streetscape and public realm.

Part 2 of the scheme, which covers Regent Street (St James’s),  Waterloo Place, Charles II Street and Haymarket involves similar improvements to the street environment and public realm, though Haymarket and Regent Street (St James’s) will remain as one-way streets.

The scheme will be delivered between August 2013 and spring 2015 to create a vastly improved environment which enhances the unique setting of listed buildings and heritage assets, and is easier for pedestrians to access and enjoy

The improvements will include the following:

  • substantially wider and repaved footways
  • resurfaced roads
  • new street lighting to modern ullumination standards
  • removal of street clutter
  • improved pedestrian crossing facilities
  • the use of quality materials such as York stone flags.

These improvements are in conjunction with the Crown Estate’s redevelopment and regeneration of the St James's Market area to provide a significant enhancement to this part of the West End.
