Chinatown Improvement Scheme - Lisle Street

Chinatown Improvement Scheme - Lisle Street

Ward: West End

Streets Affected: Macclesfield Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Wardour Street

Project Type: Streetscape

Project Overview

Chinatown is the cultural and commercial centre for a large proportion of the Chinese community in London.

The central core of Chinatown is located within the area bounded by Gerrard Street, Macclesfield Street and Newport Place. Over the years Chinatowns presence has expanded to include Wardour Street, Shaftsbury Avenue, Charing Cross and Lisle street. Together with Leicester Square this area accommodates high levels of pedestrian activity at all times of the day and night.

The City Council has made improvements to the area which included

  • renewing and widening the footway with granite paving slabs;
  • raising the carriageway to footway level and repaving with granite setts; and
  • removing street clutter.
