Berwick Street Market Regeneration

Berwick Street Market Regeneration

Ward: West End

Streets Affected: Berwick Street, Peter Street, Rupert Street, Walker's Court

Project Type: Streetscape

Project Overview

The project aim is to regenerate Berwick Street to make it a more pleasant place to live, work, carry on business and visit by improving the street environment and rejuvenating the existing market.

Westminster City Council developed a set of proposals to improve the public realm in and around Berwick Street and to improve and regenerate Berwick Street Market.  The scheme has created a shared surface that makes the most of space for trading as well as improving pedestrian accessibility.

The existing surface has been replaced with a new, attractive and hardwearing surface.  The carriageway has been raised to the footway level but has been constructed of different materials that distinguish between the footway and road.  The footways have been constructed with Yorkstone paving whilst the road has been constructed with tumbled (aged) granite setts to reflect the character of the immediate surroundings in Rupert and Broadwick Streets.   New street lighting columns have been installed and a raised crossing point has been created at the junction with Broadwick Street.  New power supply pillars have been installed to provide power for the market traders.
