Harrow Rd/Chippenham Rd Junction Improvements

Ward: Harrow Road

Streets Affected: Chippenham Road, Harrow Road

Project Type: Streetscape

Project Overview

On 8 July 2013 the Cabinet Member for City Management, Transport and Environment considered a petition submitted at the Full Council Meeting held on Wednesday 1 May 2013 entitled "Pelican crossing at Harrow Road/Chippenham Road junction”. The petition was in response to the fatal road traffic accident, which occurred at this junction on 27 March 2013 and concerns about the lack of traffic signal controlled crossing facilities. The Cabinet member agreed the following recommendations: That pedestrian crossing facilities be introduced across Chippenham Road, which has the heaviest pedestrian flow and also across Harrow Road at an appropriate location, subject to TfL approval, technical assessments and formal public consultation; That advanced cycle stop lines be approved and implemented on the eastbound and westbound approaches to the junction , subject to TfL approval; That a further report be submitted when the results of the Coroner’s Inquest are known by which time the progress made in designing and implementing the above facilities and Transport for London’s (TfL’s) decisions on their implementation should be known.

The works to the footway at the junction are complete and the traffic signals were made operational on 11th October.  Work to repair the footway outside Ascot House are also complete.  New street lighting has been erected.

Works to resurface the road have been scheduled in for beginning 14th February 2015 for a week.  During this time, Chippenham Road will be closed and Harrow Road will be under the control of temporary traffic lights.  Further work will take place in mid March to carry out anti-skid works.  All works will be complete by 31st March 2015.
