Maida Vale and Carlton Hill

Maida Vale and Carlton Hill

Ward: Abbey Road

Streets Affected: Carlton Hill

Project Type: Streetscape

Project Overview

As part of Westminster City Council’s drive to improve safety at critical junctions, this is a Local Safety Scheme looking at the junction of Maida Vale and Carlton Hill/Carlton Vale.

This has been in response to concerns raised by St George’s Catholic School and the local community on Maida Vale as there is at present poor facilities for pedestrians and particularly school children coming to and from the school.

The proposals are to upgrade the junction to include for an all red pedestrian phase and dedicated pedestrian crossing facilities.  The design is to replace the existing traffic signals with new signals which include for a red pedestrian phase.  This means that all traffic will be held at a red signal allowing pedestrians to cross.

New Street lighting will also be installed and there is also a proposal to carry out major carriageway resurfacing from the junction of Maida Vale/Carlton Vale down to Elgin Avenue and details are being developed for this work.

It is anticipated that work will commence on site at the start of January 2015 with the resurfacing expected to be carried out under nighttime road closures in mid Feb 2015.
