Oxford Circus Signal Ducting

Oxford Circus Signal Ducting

Ward: West End

Streets Affected: Oxford Circus

Project Type: Streetscape

Project Overview

Following the completion of the Oxford Circus Diagonal Pedestrian Crossings a number of problems resulting from shallow signal ducts have developed. The shallow ducting is causing problems with the road surface and causing it to fail.  Westminster City Council are planning to undertake major maintenance works to repair the carriageway at Oxford Circus.

TfL are also undertaking a programme of signal upgrades and will be upgrading the signals at the junction at the same time as the maintenance works are carried out.

New ducting will be installed across the roads and footways surrounding Oxford Circus.  This will enable the traffic signals to be upgraded and transferred into the new duct network.  The existing shallow ducts can then be removed and the road resurfaced.  The signals will also be updated at the same time.

Since the end of September 2014, works have been taking place at night to install ducting across the roads and central islands of the various arms of the junction.  The southern arm is complete and the eastern and western arms are partially complete.

There have been a large number of issues on site that have delayed the works significantly.  However, the work to complete the ducting has been finished and TfL are now on site to install and commission the new traffic signals.  This commenced on 8th June for approximately 5 weeks.

Once this is complete, the existing ducting will be removed and the junction will be resurfaced.  Work will also continue in the footway to reinstate the paving that was taken out as part of the ducting upgrade works.
