Regent Street - Pedestrian Safety and Streetscape Improvements

Regent Street - Pedestrian Safety and Streetscape Improvements

Ward: West End

Streets Affected: Air Street, Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, Vigo Street

Project Type: Traffic, Safety & Parking

Project Overview

As part of the Westminster City Council’s Local Safety Scheme Program the section of Regent Street between Vigo Street and Piccadilly Circus was identified as an area where benefits could be achieved through modifications to controlled pedestrian crossings.

As part of the Route 38 Bus Priority corridor strategy pilot study there was a proposal to reverse the existing southbound one-way working in Air Street from its junction with Regent Street to its junction with Piccadilly. This proposal was incorporated into this scheme, as it coincided with the proposed works at the pedestrian crossing adjacent to Air Street.

The pedestrian safety and streetscape improvements included:

  • Improve pedestrian access and safety through provision of straight pedestrian crossings instead of staggered.
  • Reconstructing damaged footways with high quality natural stone paving.
  • Providing anti-skid surfacing at the Regent Street approaches to the new pedestrian crossings.
  • Improving pedestrian access by providing raised granite sett treatments at its entry and exit and relocating pedestrian crossing in Regent Street.
  • Improving pedestrian safety through the provision of antiskid surfacing at the approach to the relocated pedestrian crossing.
  • Reconstructing the footways within Air Street with high quality natural stone paving.
  • Resurfacing of carriageway within Air Street.
  • Reversal of traffic direction in Air Street.

West One is also currently investigating the possibility of installing a loading bay along the eastern side of Air Street to provide for servicing to the adjacent properties.
