Bond Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme

Bond Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme

Ward: West End

Streets Affected: New Bond Street, Old Bond Street

Project Type: Streetscape

Project Overview

Bond St Horse and Rider by Elisabeth Frink, a central feature of the new Town Square at Burlington Gardens

Westminster City Council, in partnership with the New West End Company (NWEC) and Transport for London (TfL) is in the process of an 18 month major project to upgrade Old and New Bond Street.

The project will deliver a fully revitalised street environment that will better connect Bond Street to the wider Mayfair area and create a unique environment where people will want to spend time and businesses will seek to locate.

By repaving and widening footways using high quality materials, resurfacing the road, installing new street lighting and reducing street clutter, the project is delivering significant improvements that maintain Bond Street’s status as a world class destination for the purchase of high quality goods. Unique features such as the flags outside the stores and the existing lamp columns will be retained and may be enhanced.

Restricted Parking Zone
Westminster City Council is also proposing some changes to parking and loading arrangements which are key to the delivery of the project. The proposed changes will enable parking and loading activity to be better managed while providing more space for pedestrians at certain times of the day through the provision of time-controlled shared loading and parking pads on the footways. The Restricted Parking Zone (RPZ) is being introduced in September 2018, and information leaflets have been distributed to businesses and residents in the area. A copy of the RPZ information leaflet can be downloaded below, in PDF format.

LEAFLET

Three Project Briefing sessions have been held for Workstreams 1 & 3, 4 & 5 and 7 & 8. These sessions are intended to allow local businesses and residents to find out more about the proposals and how the improvements will be delivered. The material on display at the exhibitions is available below (see links below).
Current Progress
Works commenced on site during April 2017, and communications have been made with businesses and residents in the affected areas. Please see the Workstream Leaflets section for details. We also communicate frequently through our site weekly update about the works taking place in the local area. To sign up for this, please contact us via bondstreet@wspgroup.com and ask to be added to our mailing list.

Leaflets and information brochures are also been distributed to local businesses and residents regarding parking and loading arrangements, and road closures to allow for works.

Works have been taking place in along New Bond Street, Brook Street and adjacent streets Clifford Street. York Stone paving, granite kerbs and parking pads have been installed along New Bond Street, between Brook Street and Conduit Street. We have also introduced special granite paving in the space between Clifford Street and Grafton Street, as well as for the new Town Square at the junction between Burlington Gardens and Bond Street. York Stone paving is also being installed to the junction with Piccadilly and up to the junction with Oxford Street, with special granite pavement providing a gateway entrance at either end of Bond Street.

Roads are being resurfaced in the area, and we have introduced the Horse and Rider sculpture by Elisabeth Frink, to the Town Square. The Allies Bench has also been refurbished and reintroduced to the street.

Bond St Progress
Works are continuing on Bond Street until the Autumn, with some works remaining as a result of the above-ground Crossrail works near Brook Street. By the autumn, there will be continuously improved footways from the junction with Brook Street, down the full length of Bond Street, to the junction with Piccadilly.

The Restricted Parking Zone will also come into effect in September, providing an improved arrangement for parking and loading.
