Bond Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme

Bond Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme

Ward: West End

Streets Affected: New Bond Street, Old Bond Street

Project Type: Streetscape

Project Overview

Bond St Footway on corner of Bond Street and Clifford Street

Westminster City Council, in partnership with the New West End Company (NWEC) and Transport for London (TfL) is embarking on a major project to upgrade Old and New Bond Street over the next two years.

The project will deliver a fully revitalised street environment that will better connect Bond Street to the wider Mayfair area and create a unique environment where people will want to spend time and businesses will seek to locate.

By repaving and widening footways using high quality materials, resurfacing the road, installing new street lighting and reducing street clutter, the project will deliver significant improvements that maintain Bond Street’s status as a world class destination for the purchase of high quality goods. Unique features such as the flags outside the stores and the existing lamp columns will be retained and may be enhanced.

Westminster City Council is proposing some changes to parking and loading arrangements which are key to the delivery of the project. The proposed changes will enable parking and loading activity to be better managed while providing more space for pedestrians at certain times of the day through the provision of time-controlled shared loading and parking pads on the footways.

Project Briefing sessions have been held for Workstreams 1, 3, 4 and 5. These sessions are intended to allow local businesses and residents to find out more about the proposals and how the improvements will be delivered. The material on display at the exhibitions is available below (see links under Project Communications). Going forward we will be in contact about upcoming Project Briefings for future workstreams.

Start of works
Works commenced on site during April, and communications have been made with businesses and residents in the affected areas. Please see the Workstream Leaflets section for details. We will be keeping you informed of the works taking place, and will be producing a Site Weekly Update which we will distribute by email. To sign up for this, please contact us via bondstreet@wspgroup.com and ask to be added to our mailing list.
Current Progress
Works have been taking place in New Bond Street, Brook Street and Clifford Street. York Stone paving has been installed on these streets, complete with granite kerbs. The works in Brook Street (Workstream 3) and New Bond Street (Workstream 1) are now nearing completion and it is possible to see an indication of how the rest of the street will look once completed. Furthermore, we have now completed the improvements to the pedestrian area between Clifford Street and Grafton Street, in preparation for the re-introduction of the Allies Statue and the Flower Kiosk in this space.

Bond St Progress
Our next area of works, Workstream 5 has recently got underway. This Workstream includes the development of the ‘Town Square’ close to Burlington Gardens. Works will also be underway shortly in Workstream 4, between Brook Street and Grosvenor Street. Please be aware that Brook Street and Davies Street will be switching to two way traffic overnight on the 16th/17th September. The streets will close as one way streets at midnight on 16th September and will re-open at 5am on 17th September with two way traffic in effect. A new right turn from Bond Street to Brook Street will be introduced at this time. Warning signs will be installed and a letter is being circulated to inform of the change.
Road Closures
It is necessary for us to temporarily close some roads in the Bond Street area to allow us to complete the works on the public realm, including laying paving materials and providing drainage. Clifford Street and New Bond Street south of Conduit Street will require closure to traffic during September 2017 while we undertake works in this area. In January 2018 it will also be necessary for us to close New Bond Street between Grafton Street and Burlington Gardens due to the laying of granite paving in the area close to Ralph Lauren, plus other associated works.

Please see the information leaflet below for further information on the Workstream 5 road closure, planned for January 2018.

Workstream 5: Road closure workshopWorkstream (pdf 2 mb)

There is a poor standard of drainage on New Bond Street between Brook Street and Grosvenor Street (Workstream 4) which means that we will need to install new drainage connections under the road surface.  In order to allow our contractor to carry out this work quickly and safely, we will need to close the road from the 9th October for a period of three to four weeks. During this time, footways will remain open for pedestrians and a clearly signposted diversion route will be present for vehicles. Please see the attached ‘Workstream 4 Road Closure Information’ leaflet in the Project Documents section for more details.

Outline Programme

Works commenced in mid-April 2017 on Bond Street between Clifford Street and Conduit Street and will be completed by the end of 2018. Work will be suspended during the key Christmas 2017 season and every effort will be taken to ensure that construction does not affect the Fashion Week events.
