Ward: St James's
Streets Affected: Bridge Street, Parliament Street
Project Type: Streetscape
Project Overview
Westminster City Council is implementing highway improvement works on Bridge Street.
The proposed works are to include the following:
- Kerb re-alignment works along the southern footway on Bridge Street; and
- Trial holes on Bridge Street in the footway and carriageway.
To undertake the works, Bridge Street will be closed to all traffic except cyclists. Access will be arranged for local businesses to manage scheduled deliveries and for emergency vehicles travelling to or from an incident (under blue lights).
Westminster Bridge will be closed to westbound traffic. Access will be maintained for buses, emergency vehicles, cyclists and licensed taxis (but not private hire vehicles).
Whilst steps will be taken to try to minimise the impact of noise on businesses, some of the works will be noisy.
Through collaborative working with all key stakeholders which include the list below the aim is to deliver the scheme with minimal impact to the network:
Westminster City Council (WCC);
Strategic Estates (SE);
Transport for London (TfL);
MET Police; and
London Buses;
The works have been planned to achieve the following objectives:
- Safe space for all road users and construction operatives;
- Minimise the impact on the Cycle Superhighway;
- Minimise delays to buses and emergency vehicles;
- Mitigate the impact on the surrounding traffic network;
- Phasing of works areas to achieve the most effective timescales and safe working space, and
- Maintain scheduled delivery access to businesses and security to frontages.

Travel advice
Travel advice during the works
Roads in and around Victoria, the Parliamentary Estates (particularly Parliament Square, Parliament Street, Horse Guards Avenue, Whitehall, Victoria Embankment), Lambeth Palace Road, Westminster Bridge will be busier than normal while the works take place. This will have an impact upon driver and bus journeys.
Drivers should expect delays. Please plan ahead and allow more time for your journey. If possible consider retiming your journeys to avoid peak periods (7am-10am and 4pm–7pm on weekdays) and/or consider using other river crossings.
Eastbound traffic from Parliament Square will be diverted via Parliament Street, Horse Guards Avenue, and Victoria Embankment before turning onto Westminster Bridge.
For the duration of the works, the left turn from Victoria Embankment onto Westminster Bridge will be opened. This will help to minimise the impact on neighbouring locations such as Parliament Square, Whitehall, Waterloo, Vauxhall and Trafalgar Square.
